If your routine used to work and now doesn't, you're not imagining it. There are real, common reasons hair routines drift out of sync — and most of them are fixable without starting over.
1. Protein/moisture imbalance
The most common culprit. Hair needs both protein (structure) and moisture (flexibility). When one tips the other, things go sideways:
Too much protein — stiff, straw-like, snaps when stretched. Cut protein, add deep moisture.
Too much moisture — mushy, limp, no curl definition, stretches forever before snapping. Add a light protein treatment.
2. Buildup
Even good products accumulate. Silicones, oils, butters, hard-water minerals, and styling polymers can layer up and block moisture from getting in. Symptoms: dull, weighed down, oily roots, hair that won't absorb water.
Fix: A clarifying shampoo or chelating treatment, every 2–6 weeks depending on your products and water.
3. Seasonal shift
Humidity dropped, weather got hotter, you cranked up the indoor heat. Same routine, different environment. See: adjusting your routine for seasons.
4. Damage you didn't notice
Heat tools, colour, friction, sun, chlorine — damage is cumulative. A routine built for healthy hair won't work for hair that's now compromised.
Fix: Retake the quiz, flagging current damage. Your routine should shift toward more moisture and gentler handling.
5. New product or formula
Brands reformulate without warning. A product you've used for years may have changed silently. Check the ingredient list against an old bottle if you can.
6. You stopped doing the small things
Silk pillowcase, gentle detangling, low-heat drying, regular trims — none of these are flashy, but they compound. Drift on the basics shows up after a few months.
7. Hormones, stress, or health
Pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, thyroid changes, stress, and rapid weight loss all change hair texture, density, and scalp condition. The hair you have now isn't the hair you had a year ago.
What to do
Diagnose first. Don't change five things at once. Ask Rituala which of the above seems to fit, or do an elasticity test (guide here).
Try one fix at a time, and give it 2–4 weeks.
Retake the quiz if more than one thing has changed.
Frustrated? Open Ask Rituala and describe what's happening. It's good at this kind of detective work.
