How to upload your first progress photo

Step-by-step guide to taking and uploading your baseline progress photo in Rituala — the starting point for tracking real hair change over time.

Written by Support

Progress photos are the foundation of Journey — they let you see real change that's easy to miss day to day. Here's how to take and upload your first one.

Where to find progress photos

From your dashboard, go to Progress in the navigation. If you're on the Journey plan, you'll see the option to upload your first photo there.

Tips for a good baseline photo

Consistency matters more than quality — a photo that's hard to compare defeats the purpose. For your first upload:

  • Take it on wash day (or the day after) — this gives you the cleanest, most repeatable baseline.

  • Use natural light near a window, or consistent indoor light. Avoid flash.

  • Same angles every time — front, left side, right side, and crown are the most useful.

  • Wet or dry? Pick one and stick with it. Dry is usually easier to compare over time.

Uploading your photo

  1. Go to Progress from your dashboard.

  2. Tap or click Add Photo.

  3. Choose a photo from your library or take one now.

  4. Add an optional note — something specific like "Day 1, hair feels dry and frizzy at ends" is more useful than a general description.

  5. Save. This is now your baseline.

What happens next

Your first photo becomes the reference point for every future upload. Rituala will remind you to check in weekly so the trend builds over time. The more consistent you are, the more useful your progress view becomes.

For guidance on what to track and how to read your progress over weeks and months, see Tracking progress on the Journey plan.

Progress photos are a Journey plan feature. If you're on the Starter plan and want to track progress over time, you can upgrade anytime from your account settings.
